Aid from the United Nations has arrived in Ethiopia's Tigray area.

The UN World Food Programme announced that a convoy of trucks bringing food aid has entered the Tigray area, which is held by forces opposed to Ethiopia's government. This is the first humanitarian convoy to enter the region since December 15, according to the UN World Food Programme.

According to the United Nations, twenty trucks carrying food supplies have entered area controlled by Ethiopia's dissident Tigrayan troops, the first tiny but clear proof that a unilateral cease-fire proclaimed by the government last week has eased humanitarian access.

It's unknown how much extra aid will be forthcoming or when it will arrive. According to the United Nations, more over 90 percent of the 5.5 million people of Tigray's northern province require food assistance.

The World Food Programme (WFP) is a United Nations On Twitter, Ethiopia, a UN agency, announced that 13 of the trucks had arrived safely in Mekelle, the capital of Tigray, and that more trucks and fuel would arrive in the morning.

To meet the population's requirements, almost 100 trucks of help must enter each day. Due to a mix of procedural issues and fighting, no trucks have been able to enter since December 15.

WFP Ethiopia tweeted earlier on Friday that it had "just arrived in Erepti and will soon cross into Tigray, bringing in over 500 metric tonnes of urgently needed WFP/partner food and nutrition supplies for people on the verge of hunger."

Another convoy carrying over 1,000 metric tons of food would be headed to the neighboring province of northern Afar on Friday afternoon to distribute to "people in desperate need," according to the statement.

In a statement, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised Ethiopia's government and regional authorities for delivering humanitarian aid to Tigray and Afar in recent days.
