Changes in ownership of a football team may not necessarily result in quick results. City fans had to wait four years after Sheikh Mansour's Abu Dhabi group purchased the English club Manchester City to win their first Premier League title. Success came a little faster across the channel in France after Qatar Sports Investments bought Paris St. Germain. Les Parisiens won Ligue One the next season. The same might be said of AC Milan, which won the Serie A title just one year after Silvio Berlusconi took control of the club in 1986.
Newcastle United's early success would imply that they would remain in the Premier League. The squad was 19th in the Premier League league and had gone seven games without a win when the Saudi Arabian group took possession. Five months later, the Toon Army are 9 points clear of the relegation zone and appear to be on their way to safety.
The Public Investment Fund (PIF£305 )'s million purchase was controversial for a variety of reasons, but the Premier League has recognized the group as a separate organization. For the fans, the takeover is primarily about what happens on the field and how far their newly formed club can go.
"They have the ability to ascend to the very top. There's no reason why Newcastle United can't compete for the Premier League title, and the fans certainly deserve it." The Newcastle Chronicle's Andrew Musgrove described it to Football Now.
"It's been fascinating to note that the club didn't have a Director of Football in January. Newcastle was in the relegation zone, and it appeared that they would be relegated. Despite this, they went out in January and signed Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, and, of course, Bruno Guimares, despite having no prior football experience. And all indications are that they are attempting to avoid the fall. That's without a Football Director. Imagine what they'll be able to do in the summer."
The additional additions have proven to be wise investments. Kieran Trippier has energised the team, and despite being sidelined for at least six weeks due to injury, he is a constant presence in the Newcastle dressing room. Meanwhile, Toon striker Chris Wood has only scored once but has received high acclaim from both fans and manager Eddie Howe, who describes him as "amazing." Andrew Musgrove connects the signing to Manchester City's and their business in the early days of Sheikh Mansour's takeover:
"A lot of people are talking about how Wayne Bridge moved to Manchester City so early in his career, and it's signings like that that create the groundwork for what follows later."
We saw in January that spending 40 to 50 million dollars on left-backs and central midfielders was quite amazing. Especially with players like Bruno Guimares, who was coveted by a number of major league clubs. He's on Tyneside, and it really sets the tone for where Newcastle United can and will go if they make it through this season."
Newcastle United is one of England's most popular clubs, with average match attendances of over 50,000 fans. However, the club's expansion has been stifled throughout Mike Ashley's 14 years in charge. Kendall Rowan has been a season ticket holder for 16 years and believes the extra investment will help the neighborhood regenerate.
